Full title: Palestine and Syria with the Chief Routes through Mesopotamia and Babylonia: Handbook for Travellers. Contains many exquisitely detailed maps and plans of the Holy Land and surrounding areas. Part of the well-known Baedeker series, at the time considered an indispensable travel companion, this guide was published when the region described was still part of the Ottoman Empire. A warning tipped in to the title page reads: “The excessive zeal of the Turkish censorship sometimes even extends to the confiscation of guide-books. The traveller is therefore advised to place this volume in his pocket before crossing the Turkish frontier or entering a Turkish port.”
