Gustave Courbet: The Calm Sea, 1869 Journal
Gustave Courbet painted this view of the sea, receded at low tide, during his visit to Étretat near Normandy, France, in the summer of 1869. The two small boats left on the shore add to the tranquility of the scene, which is in stark comparison to many of Courbet’s other coastal landscapes, which depicted chaotic, crashing waves and dramatic skies.
