Calf with gilt double rule to perimeters of front and rear boards; spine consisting of five panels with gilt double rules to top and bottom of each panel, separated by raised bands, with gilt numeral 2 in third band; engraved frontispiece illustrating quotation from Psalms 104: 24. Condition: Good. Boards rubbed through at extremities and split from spine, though still held by binding stitches; much loss to original gilding; leather flaking from spine; tailband mostly detached; previous bookseller’s label to ffep; title page soiled; occasional foxing throughout; foldout engraved plate has been misfolded and has a two-inch closed tear. $75
William Derham (1657-1735) was an English clergyman and scientist. Physico-Theology, first published in 1713, “with large Notes, and many curious Observations,” describes in a lively style the attributes of God as shown by natural phenomena such as “the Cloathing of Animals,” “Insects Care of their Young,” “the Stomach of Birds,” etc.
