Presentation set in contemporary reddish-brown morocco binding by John MacLaren & Son, with gilt titles and decorations to spine and to borders of front boards. Marbled endpapers; frontispieces and eight additional plates. Condition: Very good. Moderate foxing; minimal rubbing to gilt spines; very slight cracking to hinges of volumes I & III. $5,000.
Each volume has been inscribed by Queen Victoria to her equerry Sir John Carstairs McNeill, and dated Sept. 27, 1875, May 1877, Dec. 1877, Dec. 1879, and Dec. 16, 1880. McNeill was a Major General in the British Army before becoming equerry to the Queen in his retirement.
