Scarce early edition of the works of this important English clergyman, renowned as much for his astonishing life story as for his lucid and forceful style. Newton was a slave trader who himself spent time as a slave, then became a noted abolitionist, evangelist, and writer of hymns, including “Amazing Grace.”
